The Feeling of December

Stepping outside, the cool air hits your face, the kind of crisp that instantly wakes you up. Somehow you can breathe a little easier this time of year. Each inhale feels clean and refreshing, like the air is settling deep into your lungs.

The birds in the trees hum their morning songs. The breeze brushes against your skin, cool enough to notice, soft enough to make you pause.

It must be December.

December is a fun month, not because of the gifts, the rush, or the materialistic chaos, but because of the people. It is the time of year when we naturally slow down and spend more time with family and loved ones.

It is when you see all the kids, cousins, aunties, and uncles together playing, laughing, reconnecting, and filling rooms with noise that somehow feels comforting. It is when we catch up with the people we have not seen all year. It is when even the simplest moments feel meaningful.

My kids are at the age where they do not want things. They want experiences.

They want hikes. They want to walk through Christmas Card Lane with hot cocoa while I sip on a peppermint mocha. They want to take that one hour drive to see the snow, even if it melts in their hands five minutes later. They want magic. They want memories. They want time.

Celebrating the Holidays

December is full of celebrations including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, and all the traditions that make each family’s season unique.

Homes glow a little brighter. Kitchens smell a little sweeter and smiles feel a little warmer.

A Special Birthday in Our Home

For our family, December always comes with an extra sprinkle of magic because it is Asher Kove’s birthday month.

And if you know us, you already know where we are celebrating. Disneyland has been his favorite place in the world since he was little, and going every year has become our tradition. We have been doing it since he turned one, and somehow each year feels just as special as the first.

It is a weekend filled with all the things that make him light up.The warm, powdered Mickey Mouse beignets that we can never get enough of.All the yummy food that has become part of our must stop list.The endless rides that somehow feel brand new every time.And the smiles that do not leave our faces from the moment we enter the gates until the moment we head home.

Closing Out the Year with Gratitude

As the year winds down, I always find myself reflecting on why I started Mermaid Kove in the first place. I wanted to create things that mean something… pieces that celebrate life’s moments, big and small, and remind people of the love woven into their everyday lives.

December brings all of that back into focus. It gently pushes us to slow down, breathe a little deeper, squeeze our loved ones a little tighter, and stay present with the people who matter most.
